Sonixtrip final-final-final show before Steve Hine heads over seas. We’ll be showcasing the new EP and playing a full 40 minutes set.  This will be a big, crazy show. Bring loved ones, small animals, coke and whisky.

Saturday’s show at Bizzo’s was our first headline at the Caringbah venue.  Having just completed our recording and mastering sessions, we were rather tired but looking forward to finally getting back to the live scene. This was to be Steve’s last show with us (however we later announced a couple of smaller shows).

We were able to enjoy a full sound check with their sound engineer and leave our gear on stage for the duration of the night (those of you who’ve played at local venues will know this well).  Was great to hear our CD nice and loud on the venue’s in house PA system.  Those in the audience who had listened to the release already spotted it quickly.

I also enjoyed the chance to meet some fans and friends who I hadn’t previously.  Was so grateful to be able to have a scotch with new friends and talk with them about what they thought of the release and where things were headed.

Finally, it was 11:30pm and with the venue at over 100 people it was time to go after the 3 support acts (Avery Rowe, Bad Voodoo and Conspiracy).  It’d been a long night and we’d all had far too much to drink but were primed and ready to give it everything.

It went really well and the live recording sounded strong.  We hope to release some footage soon and still plan to do a clip.  Thanks so much to each and every person who came.  Huge thank you to Kimberly Brian for the photos - which in our opinion are the best we’ve ever had - they really captured the night.

When putting together the first drafts for the album I instantly knew I wanted this to be more than just a demo EP.  I really wanted to tell a story.  When penning the lyrics for my own songs it’s very easy to be content because I’m so close to them.  However, when writing the lyrics to represent Sonixtrip - it’s a different process all together. I need to keep in mind what the band and the music says throughout a set.  Not only in terms of mood and energy, but also in terms of lyrical direction.

That in mind, and the EP being our first, we decided to serialise our releases.  We are no more the actors in a movie, as we write the scenes for an act, to which we develop a story or play.  We are the cast, and we have a supurb crew.

On a personal level AIEH deals with my struggles with addiction, relationships and internalising all of it.  The lyrics of which have now all been published.

Scene 1: Breathe - the beginnings.

One of our heavier and more energetic tracks - this short and acute track is the onset of an addiction.  More so, it’s living the addiction and the way we flirt with it.  We love it and we hate it.  We feel safe here.

Scene 2: Push (Into), Scene 3: Push (Me) - the consequences.

Push was the newest song to date prior to recording, it really set a new bench mark in energy and song dynamics for us.  This is the torment  evoked through addiction while drawing parrallels between that and relationships we have in our lives.  And the way outside influences (whether driven by other people, drugs, work etc) affect our relationships with other people.

It’s these things in our lives that we tell ourselves are everything — but at the end of the day that person/addiction/drug won’t be there, and we need to let go.

Scene 4: Stare - the confessions.

My personal favourite both live and recording. Continuing the story the song in my opinion is the climax of the EP as it ultimately deals with the chaos of decision, the state of helplessness and openly confesses the thoughts, desires and fears going through it.  I purposely blend the two because personally I’ve struggled with both and am always amazed at the similarities.

As the confessions continue, ultimately, it ends with a cry for help.

Scene 5: The Sun - submission and hope.

The Sun whose lyrics the title of the EP is derived from, deals with submission.  It’s the acceptance that after all this there still is hope.  It’s the calm after the storm, the rise of phoniex, the resurrection.  We felt this song was a perfect ending as it is full of resolve. We only know our darkest corners because of the lights that flicker in the distance — on the horizon.  Personally, it was about letting someone go, forgiving them, but never forgetting what they’ve done for me.
